quello che accade a Kiimakiu, una regione rurale del Kenya. Un metodo semplice, ma molto efficace, cambia la vita di numerose famiglie: l\u2019orto a forma di buco della serratura, o &#8220;Keyhole&#8221;. Junior, 9 anni, ci apre le porte dell&#8217;orto di famiglia.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00abMi chiamo Junior. Vado a scuola e frequento il centro di accoglienza locale. In classe impariamo le lettere e i numeri, ma al centro di Compassion e nel nostro giardino impariamo qualcosa di ancora pi\u00f9 grande: come diventare \u201camici della terra\u201d. I miei insegnanti parlavano spesso di carestia. La fame \u00e8 come un peso sullo stomaco. \u00c8 difficile concentrarsi in classe quando si ha lo stomaco vuoto. Come molti altri, dipendevamo completamente dalla pioggia. Quando non pioveva, i nostri piatti rimanevano vuoti. Il terreno era duro come la pietra. Mercy le ha spiegato che per produrre il cibo di cui avevamo bisogno non servivano grandi appezzamenti n\u00e9 attrezzature costose, ma solo un orto Keyhole.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non sapevo cosa fosse, ma ho partecipato alla sua costruzione. Abbiamo tracciato un piccolo cerchio di terra. Al centro abbiamo sistemato un cesto fatto di rami e rete metallica. Poi abbiamo ammucchiato la terra per creare un cumulo alto circa 80 centimetri. Abbiamo lasciato una piccola apertura per poter accedere al centro. Visto dall\u2019alto, sembra una serratura.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00abNon \u00e8 solo un semplice orto\u00bb, mi ha detto la mamma, \u00ab\u00e8 una fonte di vita\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-97ec8f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"97ec8f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Cos&#8217;\u00e8 un orto a forma di buco della serratura?<br \/><\/strong>L&#8217;orto \u00abKeyhole\u00bb (o a buco di serratura)<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00e8 un orto circolare rialzato, progettato per le zone aride. Prima finivano nella spazzatura. Oggi, invece, diventano concime naturale. Quando innaffiamo il cesto, le sostanze nutritive si diffondono direttamente nelle piante. \u00c8 cos\u00ec che crescono i nostri spinaci, il cavolo riccio e l\u2019amaranto.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercy la chiama \u00abagricoltura rigenerativa\u00bb. Non ci limitiamo a prendere ci\u00f2 che la terra offre, ma le restituiamo la sua ricchezza. Adoro vedere il terreno trasformarsi. Prima la terra era chiara e secca. Ora \u00e8 scura, ricca e piena di vita. Si vedono lombrichi e piccoli insetti. Mi sembra che siamo come dei medici che aiutano la terra a guarire.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per proteggere le nostre colture, abbiamo anche imparato molto. In precedenza utilizzavamo potenti prodotti chimici dall&#8217;odore sgradevole. Ora produciamo i nostri concimi naturali con foglie di papaya, aglio e peperoncino. Questo metodo allontana gli insetti senza farci ammalare. Le nostre verdure sono sane e prive di pesticidi.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Da noi l\u2019acqua \u00e8 preziosa. Ecco perch\u00e9 questo tipo di orto \u00e8 fantastico: trattiene l\u2019umidit\u00e0 e consuma una quantit\u00e0 minima d\u2019acqua. Riutilizziamo persino l\u2019acqua della cucina. La filtriamo con un po\u2019 di cenere e poi innaffiamo l\u2019orto. Mia mamma non si preoccupa pi\u00f9 del prossimo pasto. Spesso abbiamo persino un surplus di verdure che lei va a vendere al mercato.
